Continuum of Activities

Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Define compete.
  1. Identify one thing an animal needs to do in order to survive.
  1. Compare and contrast the ability of a fish and a porcupine to defend themselves against enemies.
  1. Develop a logical argument about why a cactus is more suited for the desert than a tree you see in your backyard.
  1. Critique the following statement: “Mice and rabbits both eat berries, so this means that they get along”.

 

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. To compete means to try to get or win something that someone else is trying to win.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • Animals need to be able to protect themselves in order to stay alive.
  • Animals need to be able to meet their basic needs (e.g., food, shelter, light, water, and oxygen).
  • Animals need to be able to compete for resources.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • The fish and porcupine are similar because they both have methods to protect themselves.
  • The fish uses camouflage and blends into its environment to hide from enemies.
  • A porcupine has sharp quills to keep enemies away.  
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • A cactus is able to store water in its body and needs little water to survive.
  • A cactus is more suited for the desert because it does not rain much in the desert.
  • The cactus will be able to survive with little water because it has adapted to be able to store a lot of water.
  • A tree you might find in your back yard needs water on a regular basis.
  • The backyard tree would not get enough water to survive.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • The statement did not show proof that the two animals get along.
  • The two animals may be rivals if they eat the same food.
  • The two animals might compete with each other to get the food.
