Continuum of Activities
The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.
This continuum of activities offers:
- Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
- Questions/activities that grow in complexity
- Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities
- Define compete.
- Identify one thing an animal needs to do in order to survive.
- Compare and contrast the ability of a fish and a porcupine to defend themselves against enemies.
- Develop a logical argument about why a cactus is more suited for the desert than a tree you see in your backyard.
- Critique the following statement: “Mice and rabbits both eat berries, so this means that they get along”.

- To compete means to try to get or win something that someone else is trying to win.
- Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
- Animals need to be able to protect themselves in order to stay alive.
- Animals need to be able to meet their basic needs (e.g., food, shelter, light, water, and oxygen).
- Animals need to be able to compete for resources.
- Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
- The fish and porcupine are similar because they both have methods to protect themselves.
- The fish uses camouflage and blends into its environment to hide from enemies.
- A porcupine has sharp quills to keep enemies away.
- Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
- A cactus is able to store water in its body and needs little water to survive.
- A cactus is more suited for the desert because it does not rain much in the desert.
- The cactus will be able to survive with little water because it has adapted to be able to store a lot of water.
- A tree you might find in your back yard needs water on a regular basis.
- The backyard tree would not get enough water to survive.
- Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
- The statement did not show proof that the two animals get along.
- The two animals may be rivals if they eat the same food.
- The two animals might compete with each other to get the food.
