Activities

  1. Identify one characteristic that can be similar in a parent and offspring.
  1. Why are we able to notice similarities in parents and offspring?
  1. Cause: a cheetah passes down its speed to its offspring. Predict a possible effect.
  1. A male dolphin is chatty, a good swimmer, and loves to play. A female dolphin also loves to play, and loves interacting with other dolphins. Draw conclusions about what its offspring may be like.
  1. Critique the following statement: “A male and a female squirrel are both very good at climbing. Their offspring will probably be good at climbing.”

Answer Key/Rubric

  • Skills
  • Personality
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
We are able to notice similarities in parents and offspring because parents pass down traits to their offspring.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • Effect: the baby cheetah will also be fast.

  • Effect: the baby cheetah will be good at hunting for prey.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • The offspring will probably love to play, just like their parents.
  • The offspring might also be chatty, and like to interact with other dolphins.
  • The offspring might also be a good swimmer, like its dad.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • This statement is most likely going to be true because we learned that parents pass down traits to their offspring.
  • Being good at climbing is a characteristic that can be passed down to offspring.
