Continuum of Activities

Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Identify a nonliving component of an ecosystem.
  1. Identify a nonliving component of an ecosystem that can affect a plant.
  1. Predict what can happen when a plant is able to get the sunlight it needs.
  1. Compare and contrast how nonliving components of an ecosystem affect plants and animals (the living components).
  1. In an ecosystem, there is a drought. Predict how this might affect all of the living parts of an ecosystem.
  1. “Nonliving and living components of an ecosystem do not interact.” Critique this statement. If you do not believe the statement is true, make any necessary changes to the statement to make it true.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • Any nonliving components of an ecosystem including air, shelter, water, soil, and sunlight.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • Some nonliving components of an ecosystem that affect a plant are water, soil, sunlight, etc.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • The plant is able to grow.
  • The plant is able to produce energy from the sun.
  • The plant is able to live in this ecosystem.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • Plants and animals (living) both need water (non-living) to survive.
  • An animal (living) needs shelter (non-living)
  • A plant (living) needs soil (non-living)
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • If the plant does not get enough water, it might not be able to survive.
  • Other animals might not survive, because they depend on plants for food and energy.
  • The whole food chain would be affected.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • The statement is not true.
  • It should say “Nonliving and living components of an ecosystem do interact.”
  • Living things, like plants and animals, depend on the nonliving components of an ecosystem.
  • For example, plants need sunlight, rain, and soil to survive. Animals need shelter, water, and oxygen to survive.
