Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Identify one change in an environment that can affect an ecosystem.
  1. Identify one effect of a hurricane.
  1. Discuss how a fire and a flood can affect an ecosystem.                
  1. What is a possible effect of a tornado touching down in an ecosystem?
  1. A fire burns through a forest ecosystem. Develop a logical argument as to why this can be both a good and bad thing for that ecosystem.
  1. “A flood can have negative effects on an ecosystem.” Cite evidence to support this statement.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • Floods, fires, tornadoes, blizzards, volcanoes, hurricanes, etc.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • A hurricane’s winds can knock down trees.
  • The rain and waves of a hurricane can flood an ecosystem.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • A fire and flood can both cause negative changes to an ecosystem. 
  • A fire can destroy both plants and animals.
  • A flood can drown both plants and animals.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • Effect: plants and animal populations may decrease.
  • Effect:  animals might lose their homes.
  • Effect: trees might be knocked down.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • A fire can hurt an ecosystem.
  • A fire will burn down trees, and displace animals from their homes.
  • A fire will kill several plants and animals.
  • A fire can also help an ecosystem.
  • The ash is good for the soil, so new life is able to begin.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • Floods can wash away animals’ homes.
  • Floods can knock down trees and destroy plant life.
  • Animals might lose resources and not be able to survive.
