Activities

  1. Write if the statement is true or false. If false, correct the statement to make it true.
    1. A food chain always starts with a producer.
    2. A food chain is more complex than a food web.
    3. It is possible for a food chain to include only 2 organisms.
    4. A decomposer could appear anywhere in a food web.

  2. In your own words explain how a food web is more complex than a food chain.

  3. Act out a simple food chain with a group of 4 or 5 students.
Use the following questions to discuss your conclusions:
    • What role do each of you play?
    • What trophic level is your organism?
    • Would it be possible for you to join with another group? Why or why not?
  1. List 5 vocabulary words based on food webs.
  1. There are levels to a food chain called trophic levels: producer, primary consumer, secondary consumer, tertiary consumer, and quaternary consumer. Explain how it might be possible for an organism to be different levels? (Hint: think about an omnivores’ diet.)
    TASK: Write a short explanation.
  2. If an organism was removed from a food chain, how would the chain function without it?
    TASK: Write a short explanation.
  1. Write an argument essay explaining why a decomposer MUST be part of a food chain/web.  Please include as many facts about food chains as you can. Responses should be about 6-8 sentences.
