Continuum of Activities
The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.
This continuum of activities offers:
- Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
- Questions/activities that grow in complexity
- Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance
Activities
- Define organism.
- Define habitat.
- Name the four things an organism depends on its habitat for.
- List two ways that people can change a habitat.
- List two ways that nature can change a habitat.
- Predict two things that you think might happen to the animals living in a forest if people destroyed it to build a shopping mall?
- Fish need clean water to live. What do you think would happen to the fish if people polluted their habitat? What could the fish do to survive?
- Frogs usually live in wet habitats. What would a frog need to do in order to survive if the pond where it lived dried up?
- Bears hibernate during the winter. What conclusion can you draw about why bears hibernate during the winter instead of the summer? Explain your thinking.
Answer Key/Rubric
- An organism is any living thing
- Habitat is the place where organisms live
- Organisms depend on their habitat for food, water, shelter, and space.
- Answers include, but are not limited to: cutting down trees, pollution, building houses or roads
- Answers include, but are not limited to: change in weather (seasons), fires, drought, floods
- Student realistically predicts two or more things that will happen to the animals. The response addresses sources of food, water, shelter, and space.
- Student can make an accurate prediction and can give two or more solutions in order for the fish to survive.
- Answers will vary. Use this rubric to evaluate student responses.
