Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Define organism.

  2. Define habitat.

  3. Name the four things an organism depends on its habitat for.

  4. List two ways that people can change a habitat.

  5. List two ways that nature can change a habitat.
  1. Predict two things that you think might happen to the animals living in a forest if people destroyed it to build a shopping mall?

  2. Fish need clean water to live.  What do you think would happen to the fish if people polluted their habitat?  What could the fish do to survive?
  1. Frogs usually live in wet habitats.  What would a frog need to do in order to survive if the pond where it lived dried up?

  2. Bears hibernate during the winter.  What conclusion can you draw about why bears hibernate during the winter instead of the summer?  Explain your thinking.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. An organism is any living thing
  2. Habitat is the place where organisms live
  3. Organisms depend on their habitat for food, water, shelter, and space.
  4. Answers include, but are not limited to: cutting down trees, pollution, building houses or roads
  5. Answers include, but are not limited to: change in weather (seasons), fires, drought, floods
  6. Student realistically predicts two or more things that will happen to the animals.  The response addresses sources of food, water, shelter, and space.
  7. Student can make an accurate prediction and can give two or more solutions in order for the fish to survive.
  8. Answers will vary.  Use this rubric to evaluate student responses.
