Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Define trait.

  2. What is the difference between an inherited trait and a trait that is learned?

  3. Give two examples of inherited traits.

  4. Give two examples of traits that you learned.
  1. Do you inherit all of your traits from your parents?  Compare and contrast some of your traits with some your mother or father’s traits.

  2. Predict what you think the offspring would look like if its mother was very short, had dark hair, dark eyes, dark skin, and attached earlobes, and its father was very tall, had light hair, light eyes, light skin, and detached earlobes.  Write a short paragraph to explain why you made this prediction, and draw a picture to show the offspring.
  1. Your friend Sally has light hair.  Both of her parents have dark hair, but two of her grandparents have light hair.  If hair color is an inherited trait, why didn’t Sally inherit dark hair from her parents? 

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Traits are qualities or characteristics of a living thing.

  2. An inherited trait is something offspring receive from their parents.  Other traits need to be taught to the offspring.

  3. Examples include, but are not limited to: eye color, hair color, height, attached earlobes, ability to roll your tongue

  4. Examples include, but are not limited to: talking, walking, playing an instrument, playing a sport
  1. No, you do not inherit all of your traits from your parents.

    Student should have some examples of traits inherited from their parents, as well as traits not shared by their parents.
  1. The offspring would most likely exhibit all of the dominant traits:
  • Short stature
  • Dark hair
  • Dark eyes
  • Dark skin
  • Detached earlobes
  1. Acceptable responses might include, but are not limited to:
  • Both of Sally’s parents must have been carriers for the recessive light hair gene. 
  • Sally’s parents inherited this recessive gene from their parents and passed it on to Sally.
