Continuum of Activities

Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Read two different paragraphs about an event and list the similarities.

  2. Read two different paragraphs about an event and list the differences.
  1. Compare an event or topic from 2 different reading passages.

  2. Classify the events from at least two reading passages into firsthand evidence and secondhand evidence.
  1. Compare several sources on a topic and determine the reliability of each.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Student will read two different reading passages about the same topic or event.  Student will need to review the reading passages to cite the similarities in the texts.  Similarities may include, but are not limited to, setting, sequence of events, character traits, etc.

  2. Student will read two different texts and identify any differences between them. Differences may include, but are not limited to, point of view, events, character motivation, character observation, etc.

  3. Student will read 2 different accounts of the same event/topic.  Student will compare these two accounts and track similarities and differences.  Student may wish to use a Venn diagram to record observations.  Comparisons may written or verbal.

  4. Student will classify the events from two or more reading passages by firsthand or secondhand evidence.  Firsthand accounts include, but are not limited to, witness accounts, letters, original documents, etc.  Secondhand accounts include, but are not limited to, third person accounts, references to event from characters not directly involved, etc.

  5. Student will read several passages about the same topic/event.  Student will compare and contrast the sources considering similarities and differences found in the texts.  Student will cite examples from the text as support to his/her claims in the comparison and differentiation of the texts. Student will determine which text is the most reliable source for discussing this topic and will support their claim with evidence from the text.
