Description

In reading and enjoying poetry at the intermediate level, it is useful to first have students listen to a reading of the poem, either by the teacher, or on CD.  This is the best way for students to detect the differences in mood within and across the stanzas of a poem.  This is also useful in aiding students' comprehension of the piece.  Discussing possible hidden meanings in the poem may work best as a whole group so that students may bounce ideas off each other.

When introducing the discussion of literary techniques used in the poem, again, it may be best to share ideas as a whole group first.  Then students could work in small groups to explore further examples.

In writing their own poems, students may want to work with a partner to brainstorm ideas and write the piece collaboratively.
