Natural Disaster National geographic video, Elements of Literature book p. 524

Suggested Instructional Strategies

W:  Students will be invited to discover more about natural disasters in history in order to better understanding the fiction passage in our book.
H:  Students will be hooked by having a discussion about recent natural disasters and being introduced to a national geographic movie about Pompeii.
E:  Students will get to see what life is like for those affected by a natural disaster.
R:  Students will rethink what could happen in the event of a natural disaster, and what measures should be taken to keep people safe in the event of a natural disaster.
E:  Students will engage in a discussion about natural disasters and will start reading the passage.
T:  The teacher will circulate the room to ensure all students are successfully engaging.
O:  The students will engage in a collaborative learning lesson about natural disasters to set the stage for a reading about Pompeii.

Instructional Procedures

The teacher will begin a discussion about a recent natural disaster and how it affected the people involved.  Then the students will be invited to watch a video about Pompeii to introduce them to the fiction passage in the Elements of Literature book.  After the video, students will be asked what they would do if presented with a situation where they were in danger of a natural disaster.  The students will begin reading the passage but the remainder of the time will be given to introducing the new vocab. words.

Formative Assessment

The teacher will pose questions to gauge student understsanding.
