Continuum of Activities

Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Define change.

  2. Identify a natural system.
  1. Erosion is the movement of weathered material. Predict how erosion could change a natural system.

  2. Summarize what would happen to your body if there was a positive change in your diet.
  1. Locks are a human-made system. They raise and lower water levels to help boats travel. Draw conclusions on what might happen if there was a hole in the wall of a lock.

  2. Develop a logical argument as to why we should be careful with invasive species and what changes they could cause in our natural systems.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. To change means to become different.

  2. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • The human body
  • The water cycle
  • Streams
  • Any system made naturally

  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • Erosion could change a natural system by wearing away on that system.
  • This could cause a change in physical appearance.
  • Erosion could also cause a natural system to work differently.

  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • If there was a positive change in our diet, we might be more alert during the day.
  • We might have more energy, and be in better shape.
  • We would overall be healthier, and our body would work more efficiently.
  • May be less likely to get sick
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • A hole in a lock way cause water to leak out.
  • This would cause the lock to not work properly.
  • This might cause boats to not be able to travel on the water.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • We should be careful with invasive species because if they have no enemy, than they will continue to grow and take over an area.
  • The invasive species could be harmful to humans.
  • We are not able to predict how an invasive species could affect the food web of an area.
