Continuum of Activities

Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Define a natural resource.
  1. Define a nonrenewable resource.
  1. Infer why coal is classified as a nonrenewable resource.
  1. Classify solar energy as a nonrenewable or renewable resource. Explain your answer.
  1. Determine if oil is a renewable or nonrenewable resource and develop a logical argument as to why we should conserve it.
  1. Classify wind energy as renewable or nonrenewable and justify your reasoning.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. A natural resource is a material or substance that occurs in nature that is useful to humans.
  1. A nonrenewable resource is a natural resource that cannot be replaced and there is a limited supply.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • Coal is a nonrenewable resource because it cannot be replaced.
  • There is only a certain amount of coal, so once it runs out, then we will not have any more.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • Solar energy is renewable.
  • Solar energy is energy from the sun.
  • Sunlight can be replaced naturally
  • It is renewable because we are able to get more of it.
  • It will not run out.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • We should conserve oil because it is a nonrenewable resource.
  • This means that there is only a certain amount of it.
  • Since oil can run out, it is important to only use it when necessary.
  • We could also try to find an alternative to oil in order to preserve it.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • Wind energy is renewable
  • Wind energy is replaceable and not in limited supply
  • Wind energy can be replaced using wind turbines
