Activities

  1. The cycling of water into and out of the atmosphere impacts climatic patterns. Some of the impacts may be damaging or dangerous for the humans on land and coast.  Define the various storm terms used.
    1. Tropical storm watch
    2. Tropical storm warning
    3. Hurricane watch
    4. Hurricane warning
    5. Small craft advisory
  1. Explain how water from the ocean affects different storms.
  1. Explain how lake effect snow develops.
  1. With a partner, summarize the changes of winter storms over the past 60 years. If possible, make a prediction about future data.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Definitions:
    1. Tropical storm watch – Tropical Storm conditions with sustained winds from 39 -74 mph are possible in your area within the next 36 hours.
    2. Tropical storm warning – Tropical Storm conditions are expected in your area within the next 24 hours.
    3. Hurricane watch – Hurricane conditions with sustained winds of 74 mph or greater are possible in your area within the next 36 hours. This WATCH should trigger your family's disaster plan, and protective measures should be initiated. Especially, those actions that require extra time such as securing a boat and leaving a barrier island
    4. Hurricane warning Hurricane conditions are expected in your area within 24 hours. Once this WARNING has been issued, your family should be in the process of completing protective actions and deciding the safest location to be during the storm.
    5. Small craft advisory – A small craft advisory is a type of warning issued by the National Weather Service, most frequently in coastal areas for boaters. It is issued when winds have reached, or are expected to reach within 12 hours, a speed marginally less than that which is considered gale force, usually 25-38 mph.
  1. Acceptable answers may include, but are not limited to:
    • Warmer ocean temperature may make the air warmer and moister
    • Wetter air in the winter can produce large amounts of snow
  1. Acceptable answers may include, but are not limited to:
    • Lake-effect snow forms in the winter when cold air masses move over warmer lake waters.
    • As the warm lake water heats the bottom layer of air, lake moisture evaporates into the cold air.
    • Since warm air is lighter and less dense than cold air, it rises and begins to cool.
  1. Suggested Rubric: This rubric may be used to assess a student’s overall mastery of the standard or eligible content:
