Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. List the phases of the moon in order starting with a new moon.

  2. About how long does it take the Earth to make one rotation on its axis?  About how long does it take the Earth to make one revolve around the sun?
  1. Today is May 1.  There is a full moon.  On which date should you see the next full moon?  How do you know?

  2. How are a lunar and solar eclipse similar?  How are they different?
  1. There is a new moon today.  Myra said we will see a waning gibbous in about 15 days.  Is she correct?  Use your knowledge of the lunar cycle to explain your answer.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. The phases of the moon are:

    • New moon
    • Waxing crescent
    • First quarter
    • Waxing gibbous
    • Full moon
    • Waning gibbous
    • Third quarter
    • Waning crescent

  2. It takes the Earth about 24 hours (23 hours, 56 minutes, and 4.1 seconds) to rotate on its axis.  It takes the Earth about 365 days (365.24 days) to make one revolution around the sun.

  3. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:

    • The lunar cycle is about 28 days.
    • Since today is May 1, the next full moon should be on May 29.
    • May 29 is 28 days after May 1.

  4. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:

    • Solar and lunar eclipses are similar because the light from the sun is blocked.
    • They only occur when the Sun, the Moon, and the Earth are all in a straight line (or very close to a straight line).
    • A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth.
    • The Moon fully or partially blocks the light of the Sun.
    • A solar eclipse can only occur at a new moon.
    • A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly behind the Earth.
    • When the Moon is directly behind the Earth, the Earth blocks all or most of the Sun’s light from the Moon.
    • A lunar eclipse can only occur at a full moon.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:

    • A new moon is the first phase in the lunar cycle.
    • The lunar cycle is about 28 days.
    • There are 8 phases in the lunar cycle.
    • Each phase lasts about 3.5 days.
    • A waning gibbous is the 6th phase of the moon.
    • If each phase lasts 3.5 days, we should expect the waning gibbous in about 21 days (3.5 x 6).
    • Myra is incorrect.
