Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

 

  1. Who will be reading your writing?
  1. What is the purpose of your writing?
  1. Change verbs in your writing to improve the sentences.
  1. Add adjectives to make the sentence more descriptive.
  1. Make story revisions to improve the quality of your writing.
  1. Explain the process that you went through to create your writing. Discuss every step from prewriting to publishing. Include details about what you did at each step.

  1. Students will tell who will be reading their writing. They should be mindful of the audience as they write.
  1. Students should tell whether they are writing to entertain, inform, explain, or persuade.
  1. Students should improve the quality of the sentence by using a more exact verb. The verb should match the event taking place or the feelings of the character.
  1. Students should improve the quality of the sentence by adding adjectives. The adjectives should help to show what is happening in the story and allow the reader to picture it.
  1. Students should make changes to the writing to improve the quality. They should have a beginning that hooks the reader. They should be sure to have a clear plot that is developed in a logical order. They should have an ending that provides closure. Students should look to add missing details and/or remove unnecessary ones. They should also look to improve their word choices by using exact words.
  1. Students should begin by discussing any brainstorming and prewriting activities that were done to plan and prepare information for the writing. They should discuss the drafting process next. Then they should explain what changes were made during the revising and proofreading. Finally, students should discuss what method was used to publish their writing.
