Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

 

  1. What will the topic of your discussion be?
  1. Create a question that could be asked during your discussion of the following article.
  1. Read the following article. List three things that stood out to you, two things you would like to discuss, and one thing you did not understand. Use these to guide a discussion about the article.
  1. Use a graphic organizer to gather information from the article to use during a small group discussion.
  1. Create rules that should be followed to guide the discussion.
  1. Build on what another student has said to continue the discussion.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Students should state the topic of the discussion. This could be a reading they completed, an issue they have learned of, or something they have learned about.
  1. Based on the article, students should create a question that could be used during a discussion of the article. Students should work to create questions that cannot be answered by simple recall.
  1. Students will read an article that will be the subject of a discussion. They will complete a 3-2-1 activity that will be used to guide the discussion.
  1. Students will gather details from the article and place onto a graphic organizer. These details can be used during the small group discussion.
  1. Students will develop guidelines to follow during the discussion. The guidelines should include preparedness for the discussion, determination of who is to be speaking, and rules for listening.
  1. Students will analyze what another student said during the discussion. They should then add to the discussion, using their own thoughts and ideas, supported with evidence. The contribution could either support what was already said, or it could refute what was already said.
