Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. What is the speaker talking about?
  1. What is the purpose of what the speaker is saying?
  1. While listening to the speaker, create two questions that you can ask.
  1. What details from the speaker helped to support the purpose of their presentation?
  1. Tell whether you agree or disagree with the speaker and explain why.
  1. How does the speaker feel about the topic of their presentation? How can you tell this?

 

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Students should identify what topic the speaker is discussing.
  1. Students should tell whether the speaker is trying to entertain, persuade, inform, or explain.
  1. As the speaker is presenting, students should create questions they have about what the speaker is saying. Following the presentation, students will have the opportunity to ask their questions to the speaker.
  1. Students should first understand whether the presentation was meant to entertain, persuade, inform, or explain. They should then identify specific details that worked to accomplish this purpose.
  1. Students will analyze what the speaker says to decide if they agree or disagree. They should refer to specific details when explaining why.
  1. Students should use specific details from the presentation to infer how the speaker feels about the topic. They could also discuss the speaker’s voice and body language as they presented as evidence.
