Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

 

  1. Choose a story or poem to use to create a recording.

  2. Practice reading your passage aloud.
  1. Identify part of the story or poem that could be shown with a visual aid.
  1. Identify words or sentence types that show a specific feeling or emotion.
  1. Explain how you will change or adjust your voice throughout the reading of the passage to make the recording more interesting.
  1. Create a visual presentation to use during the reading and recording of the story or poem.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Students will choose a story or poem to read and create an audio recording.
  1. Students will practice reading their chosen passage aloud to increase their fluency.
  1. Students will read closely to find part of the story or poem that could be represented in a visual way.
  1. Students will read closely to find specific words or sentences that show emotion. It could be words that tell how a character felt or behaved. It could be the punctuation marks used. It could be phrases describing the events that are taking place.
  1. Students will identify times throughout the passage that have a specific feeling or emotion expressed. They will then describe how they will use their voice to express these feelings or emotions. This could be a result of events taking place or reactions of the characters to the events in the story.
  1. Students will create a visual aid to use during the recording. Possible choices are a PowerPoint presentation, poster, chart, or graph. The visual aid should enhance the understanding of the story or poem being read.
