Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Students will identify who they are speaking to. Possible audiences could be their peers, teacher, or family.
  1. Students will identify the purpose of their conversation. They should indicate whether the conversation is formal or informal.
  1. Examples of informal conversations could include talking with friends, talking with family, and day-to-day conversations at work or school.
  1. Examples of formal conversations could include a written or oral report/presentation, a job or school interview, and work-related conversation.
  1. Students should state that both types of conversation are meant to communicate. Formal conversation will consist of complete sentences, proper grammar, and would use a more sophisticated vocabulary. Informal language will not necessarily follow standard grammar usage or use complete sentences. The vocabulary will be more basic and some “slang” could be used.
  1. Students could discuss that authors might use informal English when writing realistic fiction. They would do this as they create characters and events that are similar to our everyday lives. Authors want us to be able to connect to these stories. Students might also explain that authors might use informal English to make their writings interesting and creative. Poems might not follow conventional English rules.
