Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

 

  1. Tell whether the following words create a complete sentence or a sentence fragment.
  1. Choose the correct form of the verb to complete the sentence.
  1. Use a combination of simple, compound, and complex sentences to create a paragraph.
  1. Use exact words to be more specific and descriptive.
  1. Create a recording of yourself speaking to a classmate. Listen to the recording and find mistakes in how you are speaking.
  1. Identify specific ways you could become a better speaker.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Students will correctly identify sentences and fragments.
  1. Students will choose the correct form of the verb to complete the sentence. They should be sure that the subject agrees with the verb.
  1. Students should know the difference between simple, compound, and complex sentences and should apply this when speaking.
  1. Students should make careful word choices when using verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. They should choose more specific words to be more descriptive and to communicate more effectively.
  1. Students will listen to themselves speaking, checking for mistakes. They should listen for mistakes in grammar or work usage. Examples of what they might find are sentence fragments, problems with subject-verb agreement, pronoun-antecedent agreement, and correct word usage.
  1. Students should analyze their speech to identify areas that are problematic. Possible issues could be the pronunciation of words, using a particular word incorrectly, or speaking in fragments. They should write their individual problems/goals on paper. They should make a conscious effort to correct these mistakes when they are speaking.
