Answer Key/Rubric

  1. The student will create a list of the details heard as a speaker talks about a topic. Look for the student to list the information that is relevant to the topic rather than portions of the discussion that may be added to keep audience interest like jokes or stories.

  2. The student will listen to a speech and recognize the main idea. The student will show that he/she is able to sift through all of the information provided by the speaker and provide the main idea. Look for the student to select the main topic, rather than a sub-topic or supporting detail.

  3. The student will clearly differentiate between the main idea presented by the speaker and any additional information, jokes, or stories added to maintain listener interest. Look for the student to understand why those things may be added, but not to let them distract from understanding the main idea of the speech.

  4. The student will listen to a spoken selection on a topic and will provide a summary of the reasons and evidence provided by the speaker in the selection. Look for the student to identify the main idea, and recognize the details and information that support that idea. The student should use that information to create the summary.

  5. The student will listen to a speaker discuss a topic, and will draw several conclusions about the topic after listening. The student should base conclusions on the information provided by the speaker. Look for the student to provide logical conclusions that are clearly based on the topic and evidence provided by the speaker.

  6. The student will listen to the speaker’s discussion, paying attention to the reasons and evidence presented, and will provide a critique of the speaker’s argument. The student should show understanding of what makes a good argument, and should determine if the speaker’s argument meets the criteria. Look for the student to show his/her ability to identify the main idea, reasons, and evidence provided by the speaker.
