Continuum of Activities

Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Identify the statement in each pair that follows the conventions of standard English.

  2. Match each convention to the sentence that correctly demonstrates it.
  1. Modify the given sentences to show usage of standard English.
  1. Construct and deliver and oral argument or report following the conventions of standard English.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. The student will, when given several pairs of sentences, select the one that follows the conventions of standard English. The provided sentences should, within each pair, be about similar topics, but one should include errors. The student will show his/her understanding of the conventions learned by choosing the sentence that is correctly written. Provide sentences with common errors to check for student understanding.

  2. The student will match each convention (e.g. use of commas and quotation marks in a quote, use of a conjunction in a compound sentence, correct adjective order, etc.) with the sentence that demonstrates that convention to show that he/she understands the various conventions as they appear in use.

  3. Given a set of sentences that do not follow the conventions of standard English, the student will modify them to ensure that they do follow those conventions. The incorrect sentences should represent a range of conventions; specifically focusing on any the student has had difficulty with over the school year. Look for the student to recognize the correct convention and use it correctly in his/her modification.

  4. The student will construct and deliver an oral report or argument, following the conventions of standard English. The student should prepare a report based on 4th grade level content. The report should be delivered using standard English. As the student prepares, he/she should focus on word choice and other conventions to create a final product that shows understanding of the conventions of standard English.
