Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

  1. Watch a student news video clip and list the main ideas of the clip.

  2. Given a quantitative chart that complements a topic under study, explain how it contributes to understanding the topic.

Student views a documentary on Frederick Douglass or Robert Smalls and explains how it contributes to an understanding of escaping oppression.   Student interprets information from the documentary correctly.   Student transfers knowledge about Frederick Douglass or Robert Smalls and explains how it contributes to an understanding of the larger topic under study, escaping oppression.  For example, student might explain that learning to read and write helped Frederick Douglass or Robert Smalls experience a larger world and want freedom enough to take a risk and try to escape slavery.  Student takes knowledge of Douglass or Smalls and transfers the specific idea of learning to read and write as being instrumental in helping people escape oppression.   Student uses good viewing and listening skills when watching the documentary.  Student looks at the documentary throughout the video presentation.  Student listens carefully to the documentary.  Student thinks about what the documentary is saying.  Student takes notes that are helpful in understanding the topic.  Student is attentive.
