Activities

  1. In what ways do we speak differently depending on context and task?
  1. Compare speech for one context and task by rewriting it for another context and task.
  1. Formulate an interesting, clear speech that can be modified to use in a variety of contexts and tasks.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Student will identify the many different ways we speak depending on context and task.  These can include:
  • School language
  • Friend language
  • Sport language
  • Music language
  • Home language
  • Work language
  • Text language
  • Social media language

Students will recognize that none of these is inherently wrong but that they are best used in the appropriate context and task.  Students’ out of school literacies, once recognized as valuable, can be extremely helpful building toward school-based literacies.

  1. Student will write a message using any of their “languages” and then transfer it to another “language.”  For example, students can take a text message and make it into a “school language” message.  They can write a persuasive paragraph and then rewrite it as a narrative, or as a mystery.  By switching back and forth among languages, students come to realize that none are inherently wrong but that there is a time and place for their use.

  2. Student will formulate a clear, interesting speech for one task and context, such as a presentation, and then turn it into another format (such as Twitter, blog comment, advertisement, etc.).
