Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Student identifies a range of discussion routines. Discussion routines include pair-shares, small group discussions, Socratic seminars, and whole class discussions.   

  2. Student identifies specific roles that individuals play in collaborative discussions. Student correctly identifies the fluidity of roles assumed during various discussion routines. Responsibilities of different roles include, but are not limited to, to speak, to clarify information presented in a discussion, to redirect a discussion that veers from a central focus, and, at different times, to record notes.   

  3. Student explains and demonstrates methods to clearly express original ideas in a collaborative discussion. Student acknowledges the need to be prepared as a step towards clearly expressing original ideas in a collaborative discussion. This includes, but is not limited to, having read the materials being discussed and referring to text-based evidence while discussing a topic or idea.

  4. Student correctly explains and demonstrates methods to build on another participant’s ideas in a discussion. Methods to build on the ideas of another in a collaborative discussion include posing questions that connect to the ideas of another while drawing upon other relevant evidence, observations, and ideas to extend the thoughts contributed by another participant.

  5. Student synthesizes ideas expressed in a collaborative discussion to develop original and relevant contributions. Student demonstrates, with evidence, an ability to connect the ideas of several speakers in a discussion into cohesive original ideas.

  6. The student evaluates contradictory contributions of others in a discussion and qualifies or justifies their views in light of the evidence presented. When presented with a position or claims that contradicts their position or claims, the student develops a valid evidence-based qualification or refutation.
