Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

  2. Identify the most salient points made by a speaker while presenting various claims and findings.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Student identifies claims and findings presented by a speaker. A speaker’s claims and findings are identified as the evidence-based arguments and salient points that are used to support, explain, or defend a position.  

  2. Student identifies the most salient points made by a speaker while presenting various claims and findings. The most salient points are the claims and findings that most strongly support, explain or defend a speaker’s position.

  3. Student describes and displays methods to effectively communicate information as a speaker.  Methods to effectively communicate information as a speaker include, but are no limited to, appropriate eye contact, adequate volume, and clear pronunciation.

  4. Student determines relevant evidence a speaker should emphasize when presenting claims and findings. A speaker should emphasize evidence that most strongly supports, explains or defends a speaker’s position. A clear understanding of purpose and intended audience allow a speaker to determine the evidence to emphasize.

  5. Student constructs and demonstrates a presentation of claims and findings that is focused and coherent. The student constructs claims and findings that are evidence-based arguments, and emphasizes salient points to support, explain, or defend his/her position. The presentation includes appropriate eye contact, adequate volume, and clear pronunciation.

  6. Student evaluates the relevancy and soundness of evidence, reasoning, and details used to present claims and findings as a speaker. The evaluation makes direct references to the evidence provided by a speaker in order to asses their relevancy and soundness.
