Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

 

  1. What text features does the author use to organize the information in the passage?
  1. Identify the hyperlinks on a given website that will help you find more information.
  1. Based on the heading, what will this section be about?
  1. Name the text features used in the article and describe how they helped you to better understand the topic.
  1. Explain the author’s reason for using this illustration in the passage.
  1. Describe an illustration that helps you to comprehend the information more clearly.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Students will identify the text features used by the author. They will recognize features such as but not limited to titles, headings, bold print, and captions.
  1. Students will name the hyperlinks on an illustration of a website that would lead to additional information about the given topic.
  1. Students will provide information that would logically fit with a given heading.
  1. Students will name the specific text features used in the passage. They will describe the connection between these features and the topic of the passage. They will then tell how the features helped or supported the understanding of the content of the passage.
  1. Students will explain how the illustration used in the passage helps deepen the understanding of the text. They will show how details from the illustration tie in with details in the text.
  1. Student will use words or pictures to describe an illustration that would work well with a piece of text in providing information to the reader. The picture depicts what the author intends for the readers to understand.
