Continuum of Activities

Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

 

  1. What is each passage about?
  1. Identify the author’s purpose for each article.
  1. What information is the same in both articles?
  1. Do the articles have the same or different text structures? Explain.
  1. Create a graphic organizer and compare and contrast the two articles.
  1. Which article presented the information better? Use information from each article to explain why you feel this way.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Students will identify the topic of each passage.
  1. Students will determine whether each article is informing, persuading, explaining, or entertaining.
  1. Students will list the information that is present in both articles.
  1. Students will compare the text structures used in the two articles. They will identify the text structure in each article, and as a result will determine if the articles use the same or different structures.
  1. Students will create a graphic organizer that will allow them to show the ways the articles are alike and different. Students will use the organizer to compare and contrast the articles.
  1. Students will choose the article they feel presented the information better. They will use details from that passage to show why it was the stronger one. They will include details from the other article to explain why they felt it was the weaker one.
