Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

While planning a fiction story consider:

  1. Who is the main character of your story?
  1. Who is telling the story in your writing?
  1. Determine a problem that your character could be faced with in your story.
  1. Place the following events in the correct sequential order.
  1. Write an opening that introduces your character and shows the problem.
  1. Using the graphic organizer, develop events for your story and place these events in the order that they will occur in your story.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Students will identify the main character of their story.
  1. Students will identify the narrator of their story. They should tell whether the narrator is a character in the story or is outside of the story.
  1. Students should identify a conflict that their character will face in their writing. The conflict should be a concept in which a story can develop around.
  1. Students will be presented with a list of events. They will show their understanding of sequence by putting the events in a logical order.
  1. Students will write an opening to their story. They should introduce the main character and provide any important background information about the character. They should also indicate the conflict that the character faces.
  1. Students will be given a graphic organizer, such as a sequence chart. They will develop the events that will be used in their story. They will put these events into the graphic organizer showing the sequence that they will occur in the story. The events should show the plot of the story.
