Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

  1. What word or phrase in this sentence shows when the event took place?
  1. Which of the following words/phrases could be used to show that the event took place in the past?
  1. Identify the words and/or phrases in the passage that help show when the events took place.
  1. Based on the events in your story, make a list of words and/or phrases that could be used to show the sequence of these events.
  1. Use words and/or phrases throughout your writing to show when events took place, show the transition of events, and to control the sequence of the story.
  1. Explain how the author arranged the events in the story and identify the words and/or phrases that were used to do this. How did this help you to understand the story?

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Students should identify the transition or time order word/phrase in the sentence. Examples of such words/phrases are previously, before, in the past, the next day, and that night.
  1. Students will choose the appropriate word or phrase from a list that would indicate that an event happened in the past. Possible answers could be previously, before, in the past, or once.
  1. Students will read a narrative. They will identify the words and/or phrases that show time order, sequence, and transitions from one event to another. Possible words/phrases are previously, before, in the past, the next day, and that night.
  1. Students should make a list of words and/or phrases that could be incorporated into their writing to help show the connections between the major events in their story. These words should show the appropriate connection between the events, such as chronological order or sequence.
  1. Students should use appropriate temporal words and phrases to show transitions between events throughout the story. Words/phrases should help the reader to understand when the events took place. The flow of the story should be improved with these words and phrases.
  1. Students will read a narrative and analyze the author’s method of arranging the events in the story. They will decide if the events were told in chronological order or in sequential order. Transition words or phrases will be identified and students will explain how these strategies help the reader to follow and comprehend the story.
