Continuum of Activities
The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.
This continuum of activities offers:
- Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons

Activities
- Write the past tense of the following verbs.
- Complete the following sentences with the correct past tense form of the verb.
- Create a T-chart. Based on how the verbs are written in the past tense, sort them into the two columns. Label one column regular verbs and the other column irregular verbs.
- Find 10 verbs of any tense in the passage. Classify them as either regular or irregular verbs.
- Write a summary of the story using past tense verbs. Underline all regular verbs and circle all irregular verbs.
- Imagine you are at summer camp. Write a letter home, telling your parents what you have been doing at camp. The letter should be written in past tense form. Underline regular verbs and circle irregular verbs.
Answer Key/Rubric
- Students will write the past tense of both regular and irregular verbs. They will be able to recognize both regular and irregular verbs and change them accordingly.
- Students will write the past tense form of the verbs to complete the sentences. They will be able to recognize both regular and irregular verbs and change them accordingly.
- Students will be given a list of past tense verbs. Students should recognize that some of the verbs end in –ed and others do not. They should sort the verbs accordingly and label the –ed ending words “regular” and the other verbs “irregular.”
- Students will locate 10 verbs in a given passage. They must determine whether the verbs are regular or irregular. If the verbs are not in past tense, they will need to change the tense to help make that determination.
