Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

  1. What is the job of a conjunction?
  1. Identify the conjunctions in the following sentences.
  1. Using conjunctions, combine the following phrases to form complete sentences.

  2. Read the following groups of words. Do these words form a dependent clause or an independent clause?
  1. Read the following passage. Find 4 cause-effect relationships in the passage. Use conjunctions to create sentences that show these cause-effect relationships.
  1. Replace the coordinating conjunction in the following sentence with a subordinating conjunction. Explain how changing the conjunction affects the meaning of the sentence.

  1. Students should state that conjunctions are used to connect words or groups of words.
  1. Students will identify the conjunctions in sentences.
  1. Students will use conjunctions to connect phrases, forming sentences. Appropriate use of commas will be demonstrated.

  2. Students will read clauses to determine if they are dependent or independent. They should recognize that if the clause can work alone as a sentence, it is an independent clause. They should recognize that if the words do not express a complete thought, it is a dependent clause and would need to be connected to an independent clause.
  1. Students will read a passage to find cause-effect relationships. They will show these relationships in cause-effect sentences that use conjunctions. Students should choose appropriate conjunctions and proper comma usage when needed.
  1. Students will choose a subordinating conjunction to replace a coordinating conjunction. They should explain the change in how the sentence is perceived by the reader, based on the new conjunction.
