Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

  1. Write a synonym for each of the following words.

  1. Evaluate the following paragraph and choose five words or phrases to change. Replace these words or phrases with more precise words. Include one example of figurative language. You may use a thesaurus to help find new words.

  1. Students will write a word that has the same or similar meaning as each of the given words.
  1. Students will identify figurative language among a set of sentences or phrases. The sentences could contain idioms, similes, personification, etc.
  1. Students will choose a more precise word to replace a given word in a sentence. The new word should be more descriptive and should emphasize the tone of the sentence.

  1. Students will revise a paragraph, making changes in word choice. The quality of the writing should improve with more precise and descriptive words. One example of figurative language should be incorporated into the paragraph. Students could use an idiom, simile, personification, etc.
  1. Students will analyze a passage, focusing on the author’s word choice. They will discuss specific words, phrases and/or figurative language used by the author that were effective. They should discuss how this helped in their interpretation of the story.
