Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Student identifies subjects and verbs in sentences. Subjects are the part of the sentence that tells the person, place, or thing what the sentence is about. Verbs are the part of the sentence that tells what is being done, the action, or the state of being.

  2. Student identifies subjects that are singular or plural and verbs that are singular or plural.  In general, subjects that end in –s are plural and verbs that end in –s are singular. Student also needs to understand such concepts as compound subjects and verbs and collective nouns.

  3. Student identifies pronouns in a sentence and correctly matches them with their antecedent in the sentence. Pronouns are words that stand for or refer to a noun whose identity is made clear elsewhere in the text.  Antecedents are the parts of the sentence that are later replaced by a pronoun.

  4. Student identifies subjects that are pronouns and antecedents that are singular or plural in general, antecedents are nouns, those that end in –s are plural. Student needs to identify which pronouns are singular and which are plural.

  5. Student states that a subject/verb and a pronoun/antecedent must agree in number. If the subject is singular, the verb must be singular. If the subject is plural, the verb must be plural. The same is true for the pronouns and their antecedents.
