Continuum of Activities
The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.
This continuum of activities offers:

Activities
- Identify the main problem in the text.
- Name a possible cause of the main problem in this text.
- Summarize, in chronological order, the important events of the text.
- Compare two possible central ideas of the text. Provide at least one piece of evidence from the text in support of each central idea.
- Analyze the development of the central idea through the text by discussing how the central idea was developed through the details provided in the text. Provide two pieces of textual evidence in support of this central idea.
- Analyze the author’s choice of words in developing the central idea of the text. What words support your understanding of the central idea?
Answer Key/Rubric
- Students will be able to identify the main problem presented in the text. This will be dependent upon the text’s content and purpose.
- Students will be able to identify at least one cause of the problem presented in the text. This answer can vary but will always be based on a student’s ability to provide relevant, accurate textual evidence in support of their understanding of the problem and any possible reasons for the problem.
- In summarizing, students will touch on all the main points of the text in chronologically order. Students should be able to identify all of the most important ideas presented in the text and summarize these events in chronological order.
- Students will identify two possible central ideas and be able to provide relevant textual evidence in support of their interpretation of central idea. The central idea will vary dependent upon the text but will always be proven true with relevant, accurate textual evidence.
- Students will be able to identify and state a central idea and then state how the author develops the central idea with relevant, accurate textual evidence. Students should identify how the details the author chose to include help develop this central idea. Answers will vary dependent upon student understanding and will be proven true with relevant, accurate textual evidence.
- Students will identify a central idea and then choose relevant words from the text to support their interpretation of central idea. Students should recognize how an author’s deliberate choice of words impact the meaning of the text, noticing subtle nuance in language.
