Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Student defines imagery as sensory language that relies on the writer using any of the five senses (hearing, seeing, tasting, feeling, smelling) to paint a vivid picture in the mind of the reader.

  2. Students will identify any examples of imagery used in a narrative text.  At this point, student should underline or circle images and indicate which of the five senses is being evoked in the image.

  3. Student will identify synonyms for words in a narrative text to find other words that might more fully convey the experiences or events in a narrative text.  Student may use a thesaurus or online source.  Student will recognize the subtle nuance among synonyms and will evaluate which word best suits the purpose and intent of the narrative text.

  4. Students will show their understanding of an author’s use of imagery by drawing what they perceive based on the author’s use of sensory language and imagery.  Student drawing can depict any logical representation of the image.

  5. Student demonstrates an ability to develop a narrative text and, through editing strategies, look to insert sensory language in the form of imagery throughout the text.  Student will demonstrate a firm understanding of imagery relying on the five senses and painting a vivid picture in the reader’s mind.

  6. Student will analyze a narrative text for a writer’s use of imagery.  In the analysis, student should discuss how the use of sensory language in the form of imagery develops understanding of the narrative text and captures action and conveys experiences and events.  A full analysis includes mention of the image, an in-depth analysis of the image in relation to the text, and can include a critique of the effectiveness of the sensory language.
