Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Student defines clause as a group of words that can act as a sentence, but is not necessarily a complete sentence on its own. All clauses contain both a subject and a predicate, which always contains a verb.

  2. Student defines phrase as a group of two or more words that does not have the subject and verb combination and does not form a predicate.

  3. Student defines dangling modifier as a word or phrase that modifies a word not clearly stated in the sentence.

  4. Student will categorize clauses and phrases based on their understanding of the definitions in either student-chosen or teacher-chosen examples.

  5. Student will recognize errors in modifiers including dangling modifiers and will resolve them to reflect standard English.  Teacher can use online sources such as http://www.chompchomp.com/modifiers01/modifiers01.htm or http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/quizzes/niu/niu9.htm.

  6. Student demonstrates an ability to develop a text using both clauses and phrases, avoiding dangling modifiers.  Students can be asked to underline clauses and circle phrases in order to gauge their understanding of each and to identify what the modifier is describing or clarifying as a double check of proper usage.
