Activities

  1. Define redundancy and understand what it means to use concise language.

  2. Identify examples of redundancy in sentences.
  1. Develop a text based on a writing prompt and edit that text to ensure that wordiness and redundancy are avoided.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Student defines redundancy as unnecessary words or needlessly repeating words in a sentence. Redundancy makes for less effective sentences.  Student understands that to be concise means to reduce unnecessary words, or to use one more precise word to replace a longer phrase.

  2. Students will identify any examples of redundancy in teacher-created examples.  Sentences can include the following examples:
  • It is absolutely essential for families to throw away their garbage so that our neighborhoods stay clean.
  • The students failed the test but the teachers didn’t know the reasons why.
  • The children are currently playing in the playground.
  • The football player had a very unique body type.
  • The poisonous plant on the table, the poinsettia, is called toxic because it can harm animals.
  1. Student will identify more concise ways to write the sentences provided by the teacher.  Student should demonstrate an understanding of precision of language and using only the words required for meaning.

  2. Student demonstrates an ability to compose a text and, through editing strategies, ensure that they have used precise language and avoided redundancy.  If unnecessary words are found, student can either self-edit or through peer editing change the narrative text to reflect an awareness of redundancy.
