Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons

  1. Student states an objective summary of the informational text. An objective summary of an informational text includes information explicitly stated in the text. It states the key ideas and details of the text without adding personal opinion or commentary.

  2. Student identifies the central idea of an informational text. The central idea is the position or idea an author conveys through the text.

  3. Student explains, with text-based evidence, the central idea of an informational text. The student’s explanation of a central idea should identify the position or idea the author intended to convey through an informational text. Text-based evidence from multiple sections or parts of an informational text should be used to support the explanation.

  4. Student identifies patterns in an informational text that are used by an author to develop a central idea. The student recognizes patterns in text details and structural elements such as headings, subheadings, and counterarguments that contribute to and develop the central idea of a text.

  5. Student analyzes the development of a central idea over the course of an informational text. The student supports an analysis of a text’s central idea through a clear understanding and articulation of the key ideas and details of the text. The analysis of the central idea and its development is further supported by multiple references to the central idea’s reflection in structural elements such as headings, subheadings, and counterarguments.

The student uses evidence from all sections or parts of an informational text to explain how a specific central idea emerges and develops throughout the course of the text.
