Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  1. Student identifies appropriate use of verb voice. The student identifies verb voice as being active or passive. Verbs used in the active voice signify action performed by the subject of a sentence. Verbs used in the passive voice signify action that is performed to or on the subject of a sentence. Verbs in the passive voice are past participles with a form of the verb “to be” proceeding it. An example of a sentence using correct active verb voice is “Mr. James teaches the students in the 6th grade.” An example of a sentence using correct passive verb voice is “The students in the 6th grade are taught by Mr. James.”

  2. Student identifies appropriate use of verb mood. Verbs are classified as being used in the indicative, imperative, interrogative, conditional and subjunctive moods. Verbs used in the indicative mood make a declarative statement. For example, “Rebecca does her homework.” Verbs used in the imperative mood make a command. For example, “Do your homework.” Verbs used in the interrogative mood ask a question. For example, “Where do you do your homework?” Verbs used in the conditional mood express a condition of possibility. These include words such as could, might, or should, to express the condition. For example, “I could finish my homework if it is quiet.” Verbs used in the subjunctive mood express a wish or a desire. For example, “If I did not have to do my homework, I would watch TV.”
