Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Student defines a modifier’s function in a sentence. A modifier is correctly identified as a word or a phrase that describes or represents another word in a sentence. Modifiers can be adjectives, adverbs, phrases, or clauses.

  2. Student identifies examples of modifiers in sentences. For example, in the sentence, “The quarterback made a brilliant play,” the adjective “brilliant” is a modifier because it describes the play. Also, in the sentence, “Betty sang beautifully,” the adverb “beautifully” is a modifier because it describes how Betty sang.

  3. Student identifies misplaced and dangling modifiers in a sentence. Modifiers that are not located near the word(s) they are modifying are misplaced or dangling. For example, “Terrance cleaned the fish he caught in the bathtub,” includes a misplaced modifier because it is not clear where Terrance caught the fish and where in cleaned the fish.

  4. Student explains the impact of a misplaced and dangling modifiers on a sentence’s meaning. Misplaced and dangling modifiers negatively impact the clarity of a sentence because the function of the modifier is ambiguous.

  5. Student constructs original sentences that place phrases and clauses within the sentence. Phrases and clauses are placed correctly in sentences when modifiers are located near the words they are modifying.

  6. Student revises sentences with misplaced and dangling modifiers. The student revises misplaced and dangling modifiers by making sure modifiers are located near the words they are modifying, that subjects and verbs are closely connected, and that it is clear which noun a pronoun stands for.
