Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Student defines antecedent. An antecedent is a noun to which a pronoun refers.

  2. Student matches a pronoun to its antecedent in a sentence. In the sentence, “Judith brought her dog to the veterinarian,” the word “her” is a pronoun that refers to the antecedent “Judith.”

  3. Student recognizes vague pronouns in a text. In the example, “After Brian dropped his son off at daycare, he took a nap,” the word “he” is a vague pronoun because it is unclear if it refers to Brian or his son.

  4. Student compares the meaning of a sentence that uses clear pronouns with a similar sentence that uses vague pronouns. The student correctly compares differences in the meaning and clarity of the two sentences.

  5. Student constructs original sentences using pronouns with clear antecedents. Examples may be similar to the following sentence:
  • Jeff studied for his science test for three hours. (“Jeff” is the antecedent, and “his” is the pronoun.)
  1. Student revises vague pronouns in a sentence. For example, the student correctly revises sentences to maintain clear relationships between pronouns and the antecedents they represent.
