Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Student lists commonly misspelled words. Examples of commonly misspelled words include, but are not limited to, irregular verb tenses, cognates, homophones, contractions, and plural irregular nouns.

  2. Student identifies resources or tools used by writers to spell correctly. Examples include, but are not limited to, dictionaries, glossaries, thesauri, and computer-based spell checking programs. A writer can access these resources digitally or in print to spell correctly.

  3. Student identifies commonly misspelled words into text. Citing direct evidence from a text, the student identifies misspelled words with or without using appropriate resources or tools.

  4. Student displays correct use of resources or tools used by a writer to spell correctly. Examples include, but are not limited to, dictionaries, glossaries, thesauri, and computer-based spell checking programs. Most dictionaries include the pronunciation, the part of speech, and the definition of a word. Glossaries include content specific words included in a specific text. Thesauri allow students to differentiate between words that have multiple meetings or more than a single part of speech.

  5. Student constructs original writing using resources or tools to ensure words are spelled correctly. The sentences constructed by the student include words that are spelled correctly.

  6. Student revises writing to ensure words are spelled correctly. For example, the student correctly revises sentences to accurately spell through the use of resource and tools to verify the correct spelling.
