Continuum of Activities

Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Find the quotient of 6872 and 8
  1. Solve:
  1. Andrew has 8 days to read his book for his book report.  If the book has 256 pages and he wants to split it up evenly, how many pages should he read each day?
  1. Sophia’s mom just bought a box of cookies for an after school snack.  If the box has 135 cookies and Sophia has eight of her friends over, how many cookies can each of them have if they all get the same amount?
  1. Julie is at the pet store and needs to buy birdseed for the feeder outside.  If the birdseed costs $2 per pound and Julie has $25 in her wallet, how many full pounds of birdseed can she buy?

 Explain your answer.

  1. Bill and Jack are setting up chairs in the school gym for the spelling bee.  They can fit 9 chairs in each row.  If they have 246 chairs to set up, how many full rows can they make?  How many chairs will they have left over? Explain your answer.
  1. There are 43 students that need to ride in a car for a field trip.  If each car can hold 4 students, how many cars will be needed for all the students?  Explain.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. 859
  1. 189 R 2
  1. 32 pages each day.

256 ÷ 8 = 32

  1. 15 cookies each.

135 ÷ 9 = 15

Remember to count Sophia, so there are 9 children

  1. Julie can buy 12 full pounds of birdseed.

Explanations might include, but are not limited to:

  • You have to divide the amount of money she has by the cost of the birdseed.

25 ÷ 2 = 12 R1

  • This means that she has enough money to buy 12 full pounds of birdseed.
  • The remainder means that she has money left over, but not enough for another full pound.
  1. They can set up 27 full rows of chairs and will have 3 chairs left over.

Explanations may include, but are not limited to:

  • You have to divide the total amount of chairs that they have by the number of chairs that can fit in each row.

    246 ÷ 9 = 27 R3

  • This means that you can make 27 full rows, each with 9 chairs in them.
  • The remainder of 3 means that you will have 3 extra chairs that will not be part of the 27 rows that are set up.
  1. 11 cars are needed to fit all the students.

Explanations may include, but are not limited to:

  • Divide the total students, 43, by 4, the number that will fit in each car.

43 ÷ 4 = 10 R3

  • This means you will have 10 full cars with 3 students left over.
  • Since you have 3 additional students, you will need one more car.
