Continuum of Activities

Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Keith is 5 times as old as Mike.  If Mike is 4 years old, write an equation to show Keith’s age.
  1. The equation 48 = 12 x 4 is written on the board.  Your teacher asks you to write out two sentences that describe this equation.  What two sentences would you write?
  1. Over the summer Jennifer earned $125 doing chores in her neighborhood.  He older brother worked at a hot dog stand over the summer and made 3 times that amount.  Write an equation and solve it find out how much her older brother made over the summer.
  1. During a science lab you were studying different kinds of rocks.  In class you had 5 bags that each contained 28 rocks.  Fill out the diagram below, then write and solve an equation to find out how many rocks were in the bags all together.

  1. Write a statement represented by the model below.  Explain your answer.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. 4 x 5 = 20 years old
  1. Acceptable answers should be similar to:
  • 48 is 12 times as many 4.
  • 48 is 4 times as many as 12.
  1. Equation :  $125 x 3 = amount of money her brother made
$375 = amount of money her brother made

Acceptable equations should be similar to:

  • 28 x 5 = number of rocks
  • 5 x 28 = number of rocks
  • Both would have the same solution of 140 rocks
  1. Student answers will vary.

Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:

  • 42 is 7 times as many 6
  • 42 is 6 times as may 7
  • 7 times as many as 6 is 42
  • 6 times as many as 7 is 42
  • The model has 7 boxes each with the value of 6 in it so that shows 7 equal groups of 6
  • The model show that the total value of the boxes is 42
