Continuum of Activities

Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Mr. Jones goes to the gym every morning and does the same number of jumping jacks.  Last week he did a total of 175 jumping jacks.  If Mr. Lai does two times as many as Mr. Jones each day, how many does he do?
  1. Marsha has 56 Barbie dolls and 8 stuffed animals.  Write and solve an equation for Marsha to find out how many times as many Barbie dolls as stuffed animals she has.
  1. Based on the table below, Nancy said that she has read three times as many books as Linda.  Write an equation to show if she is correct or not and explain.
  1. Your class is going on a field trip to the zoo and needs to have all students hand in permission slips.  On Monday 4 students remembered to bring them in.  On Friday the teacher collected 5 times as many.  How many total permission slips were turned in on Friday? Fill in the diagram and write and solve an equation to find the answer.

  1. A pet store is having a fundraiser and sold 146 bags of pet treats and earned $438. They also sold 56 chew toys for three times as much as the treats. What was the total amount they made on their fundraiser?  Show your work.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Mr. Lai does 50 jumping jacks per day.
    175 ÷ 7 = 25 jumping jacks per day for Mr. Jones
    25 x 2 = 50

  2. 56 ÷ 8 = ?
When this is solved it will let us know that Marsha has 7 times as many Barbie dolls as stuffed animals.

  3. Nancy is correct.
Work may include, but is not limited to:
          Equation: 3 x 3 = 9
Linda read 3 books and three times that amount is 9 books, the same amount Nancy read.

  4. Table:

The total number of permission slips turned in is 24.  This can be shown by the equation 6 x 4 =24

  5. The total amount they made is $942.
Student work might include, but is not limited to:
  • Find the cost of each pet treat by dividing the money made by the number of bags sold ($438 ÷ 146 = $3 per bag)
  • Find the amount of each chew toy (3 x 3 = 9) - $9 for each toy
  • Find the total made on chew toys (56 x 9 = 504) - $504 made on chew toys
  • Find the total amount made on the whole fundraiser (438 + 504 = 942) - $942 total made
