Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

  1. While Al was staying overnight on vacation with his friends his only expenses were for food. Al spent $7.52 on lunch, $9.74 on dinner and then $5.16 on breakfast the next morning. If Al had $2.68 left, how much money did he begin with?

  2. Mia went to the fabric store and found the perfect purple fabric for new curtains in her bedroom. The fabric cost $3.49 per yard. How many yards could Mia buy if she has $50.75 in her purse? Round to the nearest tenth of a yard.

  3. While Sara was out at the store she found a great sale on her favorite type of ice cream.  Each box was on sale for $2.89.  She was so excited that she bought 3 of them.  How much money did she spend on ice cream?

  4. While you were driving in the car with your family you noticed the odometer showed there was enough gas to drive 316.3 miles.  When you arrived at your destination the odometer showed that you now have enough gas to travel 248.9 miles. Look at the table below and decide what your destination was.

  1. Marsha wants to purchase an iPad when it goes on sale in 4 weeks for $350.  If she earns $7.30 per hour at her job and works at least 12.75 hours each week, will she be able to buy the iPad?  Justify your answer.

  2. Is the quotient of 6.7 divided by 0.8 greater than or less than 6.7?  Why?

Acceptable justifications may include, but are not limited to:

  • Weekly money made is hourly wage multiplied by the minimum hours worked $7.30 x 12.75 hrs. = $93.075/week at a minimum
  • Take the minimum weekly amount and multiply that amount by 4 weeks 93.075 x 4 = $372.30 total
  • $372.30 is greater than the $350 needed for the iPad, so she can buy it
  1. Acceptable answers may include, but are not limited to:
  • The quotient is greater than 6.7
  • Answer must mention that when you are dividing a given amount by a value less than a whole number value the product is greater than the dividend.
  • Answer may include work showing the traditional or another algorithm for division written out with the answer equal to 8.375.
