Activities

  1. If your teacher can grade 20 papers in 30 minutes, how many papers can she grade in one minute?
  1. Give that x and y are proportional in the table below, find the value of z in the equation x = zy

  1. Three restaurants sell the same type of hotdogs.  The table below shows the cost of the hot dogs at each restaurant.  Which store is selling them for the lowest price per hotdog?

  1. Look at the graph below and find the constant of the proportionality between the cost of the dog food and the number of pounds. Explain how you found your answer.

  1. A family is driving 140 miles to go camping this weekend.  The family drove 1.4 hours, and needed to stop or gas.  At this point they were half way to the camp site.  What was their speed in miles per hour?  Show your work

Part B) After the family got gas in the car they were able to drive at a speed of 40 miles per hour.  How much longer did it take them to get to the camp site?

  1. A race car driver can drive 252 miles by using 18 gallons of gas.  He is finishing a race and has 5 gallons of gas left in his tank.  The race has 62 miles left to the finish line.  Will the race driver have enough gas to finish the race?  Explain

Part B) Tell how many miles short the driver is or how many miles extra that he has? Explain

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. of a paper per minute
  1. Z = 6
  1. The cheapest price per hotdog is at Hotdogs are Yummy restaurant, they are $0.95 per hotdog.

  1. The cost of the dog food is $1.75 per one pound of food.  Explanations might include but are not limited to,
  • Look at the graph and find a point that lies exactly where two lines cross so I can find exact values.
  • On this graph 4 pounds is exactly $7.00
  • You can find the price per pound by division $7.00 ÷ 4 = $1.75 for one pound
  1. The family was driving 50 miles per hour.  Work might include but is not limited to,
  • The family has traveled half of the distance.  140÷2= 70 miles traveled
  • 70 miles ÷ 1.4 hours = 50 miles per hour

Part B) The family will get to the camp ground in 1.75 hours.  Student work might include but is not limited to,

  • The family has 70 miles left to get to the camp grounds
  • 70 miles ÷ 40 miles = 1.75 hours
  1. Yes the driver has enough gas to finish the race.  Student work might include but is not limited to,
  • The driver can get 14 miles per each gallon of gas.  252 miles ÷ 18 miles = 14 miles for one gallon of gas
  • The driver can travel 70 miles with the amount of gas that they have left in his tank.
    14 miles • 5 gallons = 70 miles left to travel

Part B) The driver will have enough gas to finish the race with 8 miles left.

  • 70 miles – 62 miles = 8 miles left to drive
