Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. A school will survey students about the quality of the school’s lunches that are served. The principal can either randomly survey several students from each grade level or ask students to voluntarily complete the survey. Which group would be a random sample?
  1. A survey is being conducted to determine if a cable company should add another sports channel to their schedule. Should they survey 100 people attending a sporting event or 100 people walking around the mall?
  1. A survey is being given to find out what type of music is most popular in a particular city.  Give an example of a group of people that would be used for a random sample and a group that would not be random.
  1. An ice cream company is trying to come up with a new flavor.  They are considering asking 100 elementary school students. Would this be a good sample?  Explain your answer.
  1. The chart shows the number of students by grade level.  In order for a survey of 100 students to be a good basis for drawing conclusions about the students at the school, how many 11th grade students should be part of the survey? Show your work.

  1. There should be 25 11th grade students that take the survey.  Student work might include but is not limited to,
  • Finds the total number of students 60 + 120 + 100 + 120 =400
  • Find a number that represents an equal portion of 11th grade students compared to all the students
  • X = 25 students from 11th grade
