Continuum of Activities

Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. List two types of coverings that animals may have to help protect their skin.

  2. Describe three ways you use your limbs.
  1. Compare and contrast the external characteristics of a fish and a bear.

  2. Compare and contrast the ways in which you use your limbs and the way a frog uses its limbs.
  1. An animal lives near a river.  Sometimes the land is very wet.  Other times the land is dry.  There are lots of trees and other plants that provide shade.  Write a paragraph to describe the external characteristics that an animal should have in order to survive in this area.  Explain why each of the characteristics is helpful.

  2. Max loves dogs, but he hates cats because he says they look too different.  Write a letter to Max explaining why dogs and cats are not as different as he thinks.

       Differences include, but are not limited to:

  • Fish have scales.  Bears have fur.
  • Fish have fins.  Bears have legs, paws, and claws.
  • Fish have gills.  Bears breathe through their nose or mouth.
  • Fish do not have ears.  Bears have ears.

  • Jumping
  • Swimming
  • Climbing
  • Digging

       Differences include, but are not limited to:

  • Humans use their limbs to feed themselves.  Frogs use their tongues.
  • Frogs cannot walk or run.
  • Frogs cannot hold objects.
  1. Characteristics that are beneficial include, but are not limited to:
  • Webbed feet help animals swim.
  • Feathers dry quickly, but will provide warmth.
  • Claws help animals climb trees and catch prey.
  • Long legs will allow the animal to stand in mud or water without getting its body wet.
  1. Student letter should explain similar external characteristics of dogs and cats.  Student may also include other similarities.  Examples include, but are not limited to:
  • Tail
  • Four legs
  • Four paws
  • Claws
  • Sharp teeth
  • Fur
  • Whiskers
